Don't Beg for Likes or Followers If you want to increase your social media profile, there are a lot of things you can do (and not do). One thing that’s important to avoid is begging for likes or followers. You may think it’s harmless enough, but in the long run, it won’t help much. And in some cases, it might actually make your account worse. There are better strategies out there (check out this post on what to do if you don't have many followers). What We Talk About When We Talk About Social Media One of the most popular posts on my blog is “Social Media Gone Bad”. It generated a lot of discussion. Many people came up with their own ideas for what social media is, and how it should be used. I thought it was an important topic to write about given the current state of social media, so I decided to write another post that would address many of the topics that come up in relation to social media usage. It turns out that people not only have strong opinions about what social media is (or isn’t), but they also want to talk about it. The amount of online commentary regarding this topic is extensive (and very entertaining). Social Media is Like a Mirror You can’t know how good you look without taking a good look at yourself. This is true of social media as well. You can’t be sure that your brand or business is effective without taking a good look at your efforts (and the results they generate). It’s important to step back and review where you are with social media – and to assess if it makes sense for what you do – before jumping down the social media rabbit hole (or spending your hard-earned money on it). Social media is a great tool, but it’s no magic bullet. Too many people think it's going to solve all their problems for them, or that it's going to do the work for them. The reality is that you have to put in a lot of work and effort if you want to see results. Here’s a great infographic from Mashable about the best time of day to post on Facebook for maximum exposure. The updated version below includes Instagram engagement data because I also wanted to include that in here as well. One of the questions that often comes up regarding social media is how does one find out what people are saying about their content? If you have a large audience, you’ll probably see a lot of comments on your posts. But even if you only have a couple hundred followers, there's a good chance people will comment on your post to let you know what they think. It’s important to read those comments so you know if it’s something that needs to be worked on or if it's something that needs to be improved. This is especially useful information for bloggers because it can help them improve their content and increase engagement levels. cfa1e77820
